Readers Theatre at Vonore Elementary

Building Confidence Through the Arts

This spring, fourth-grade students at Vonore Elementary School brought the legendary story of Paul Bunyan to life through a special Monroe Area Council for the Arts Readers Theatre program made possible through grant funding from SafePath Monroe.

Through the grant, teachers at VES were able to purchase sound equipment and classroom supplies to support an engaging theatre experience for students.

The project culminated in a lively performance of a Paul Bunyan tall tale, complete with choral musical accompaniment.

Students auditioned for reader and acting roles, then worked together to prepare performances for parents and fellow students in May.

What made this project especially meaningful was the collaboration behind it.

The MACA Readers Theatre program brought together the school’s music, art, and language arts teachers, along with the librarian, creating an interdisciplinary learning experience that blended storytelling, performance, music, and creativity.

One teacher shared that many of the students who earned reading parts were students who often struggle with reading in traditional classroom settings.

Through MACA Readers Theatre, these students found their voices, built confidence, and experienced the joy of success in front of an audience.

It was truly delightful to see these young performers shine. Bravo to the students, teachers, and everyone who helped make this meaningful experience possible!
