Learning Through Art

From August 19 through September 3, preschool children and their families across Monroe County had the opportunity to explore creativity and early learning through MACA’s Pre-School Art & Literacy: Collage program.

Led by teaching artist Trish Delagardelle, ten classes were held at Sweetwater Head Start, Madisonville Elementary, Madisonville Head Start, Vonore Elementary, and Tellico Plains Elementary.

Learning Through Art

During the collage activities, children explored colors, shapes, textures, and different materials as they created artwork of their own. While the projects were fun and creative, they were also helping children develop important early-learning skills such as: spatial awareness, design, and early math concepts to the fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination that help prepare young hands for writing.

Just as importantly, the program created an opportunity for children and adults to learn and create together. Trish observed that “the adults along with the children seem to enjoy spending time together creating.”

By the Numbers

Across the ten classes, the program engaged: 74 preschool children 56 adults 10 seniors 140 total participants

Teachers have also been enthusiastic about the program and the positive experience it creates in their classrooms. The response has been so encouraging that Trish noted how wonderful it would be to offer this type of class on a monthly basis.

That enthusiasm echoes feedback MACA has received from educators who have participated in our Pre-School Art & Literacy programming: “Our students look forward to each visit with excitement and curiosity, and we have seen growth not only in their creativity, but also in their confidence and social development.”
Programs like this demonstrate how art can become a natural part of early learning. They help children create, explore, connect, and build skills that extend well beyond the art project itself.
