Monroe County Health Council Honored with Business Spotlight Award

Last Updated 8/21/2025Posted in News

During the August 9th Quarterly Downtown Madisonville Alliance Meeting, Main Street Director Karen Carey proudly presented the very first Quarterly Business Spotlight Award to the Monroe County Health Council (MCHC), recognizing their leadership, service, and lasting impact in the community.

The Health Council serves as the umbrella for programs, like the Monroe County Prevention & Wellness Coalition (PWC), that make Monroe County "healthier, happier, & safer". Its work spans community gardens, domestic violence advocacy, prevention and wellness initiatives, resources that improve access to care, and support for those living with diabetes.

Examples of this impact can be seen through programs like Healthy Roots Monroe, which brings hands-on garden learning to schools; Monroe STOPe survivor advocacy and awareness events; the Prevention & Wellness Coalition’s community prevention work and annual Smash the Stigma event; and the Monroe County Resource Guide. Collectively, the council's and coalition's efforts connect families to needed services and support. Together, their efforts show the strength of many moving parts working toward one united mission.

Beyond their daily programs, the Health Council’s staff consistently step up to serve the Downtown Madisonville Alliance. Through designated representatives — including one from the Council and one from its Prevention & Wellness Coalition program — MCHC ensures that health, wellness, and prevention priorities have a strong voice in community planning and a presence at community events.  The Alliance also appreciates the Council's efforts to host community events of their own.

Led by Executive Director Heather Rhymes, with program leadership from Coalition Director Gabbie McConkey and supported by a dedicated team, the Health Council continues to strengthen Madisonville by building bridges, fostering partnerships, and investing in a healthier future.

Congratulations to the entire Monroe County Health Council team — Heather Rhymes, Gabbie McConkey, Tammie George, Tabitha Prock, Daniela Meeks, and Mikaela McConkey — on this well-deserved recognition. Your collective work truly makes Monroe County a "healthier, happier, and safer" place to call home.
