More Than 500 Students Help Unveil “Community Love” Mural in Downtown Madisonville

Last Updated 5/14/2026

The Vision

The vision for Community Love began with DMA President, Melanie Sloan-Carr's idea to add a permanent mural that reflected the heart of Madisonville while involving the very people who represent its future.

What started as a public art concept quickly grew into a true community collaboration centered around creativity, connection, and pride in place. The goal was not simply to install a mural, but to create an experience that would allow students to actively help shape a lasting addition to their community.

The project also became part of Madisonville’s ongoing Tennessee America 250 efforts, celebrating the stories, people, and partnerships that continue strengthening communities across Tennessee.

The Partnership

Bringing the Community Love mural to life would not have been possible without strong community partnerships and a shared commitment to investing in Madisonville’s future.

A special partnership with JTEKT North America played a major role in making the project possible through their sponsorship and continued support of community-centered initiatives in Madisonville. Their investment helped transform an idea into a permanent public art installation that now stands as a symbol of creativity, collaboration, and community pride.

The project also highlighted the strength of partnerships between local businesses, schools, volunteers, the City of Madisonville, and the Downtown Madisonville Alliance — all working together toward a common goal.

Through these collaborations, Community Love became far more than a mural. It became a reflection of what can happen when a community comes together to create something meaningful for future generations.

The Collaboration

The heart of the Community Love mural was found inside the art classrooms of Madisonville Primary School, where more than 500 students became part of the creative process.

Under the guidance of Mrs Charlotte Lee, students spent weeks painting individual mosaic pieces that would later come together to form the final mural. Each student contributed their own creativity, colors, and artistic expression, making every section of the mural unique while still becoming part of something much larger.

The project gave students the opportunity to participate in a real public art initiative while learning the value of teamwork, creativity, and community involvement. What began as hundreds of individual painted pieces eventually transformed into one collaborative work of art that now permanently represents the spirit of Madisonville.

For many students, seeing their artwork become part of a lasting public installation was a moment they will remember for years to come.

The Build

As the hundreds of hand-painted mosaic pieces began arriving, the vision for Community Love slowly started becoming reality. Piece by piece, the mural was carefully assembled as colors, patterns, and individual student artwork came together to form one unified design. What had once been hundreds of separate creations inside Madisonville Primary School classrooms transformed into a large-scale public art installation filled with personality, creativity, and meaning. Throughout the process, excitement continued building within the community as students, teachers, volunteers, and project partners watched the mural take shape and prepare for its permanent home in Houston Park.

The Reveal

On unveiling day, Houston Park came alive with excitement as more than 500 Madisonville Primary School students gathered alongside families, community leaders, project partners, and local dignitaries for the official reveal of Community Love.

As guests arrived, Tyson Clement, a student at MPS, played the violin and his music filled the park while students waved handheld American flags in celebration of the project and its connection to Madisonville’s Tennessee America 250 efforts. The ceremony featured a student prayer led by Rylee Jo Underwood, pledge of allegiance led by Sawyer Tallent, unveiling participation by students James Benson and Gabriel Atkins, remarks by students, Caston Joslin and Malayna Brackett, and recognition of the partnership that helped bring the mural to life.

One of the most memorable moments of the morning came as students joined together for the unveiling countdown before the curtain was pulled back, revealing the completed mural to the community for the very first time. Cheers erupted throughout the park as students saw their individual artwork transformed into a permanent public display celebrating creativity, collaboration, and community pride.

The Legacy

Now permanently displayed in Houston Park, Community Love stands as more than a mural — it stands as a lasting symbol of what can happen when a community comes together around creativity, collaboration, and shared pride in place.

For the students who helped create it, the mural represents a permanent connection to their hometown and a reminder that their ideas, talents, and contributions matter. For the community, it serves as a new landmark celebrating unity, public art, and the importance of investing in future generations.

As part of Madisonville’s ongoing Tennessee America 250 efforts, the project also reflects the stories, partnerships, and community spirit that continue shaping Madisonville’s future. Long after the unveiling ceremony ended, Community Love remains a reminder of the people who helped build it and the community that came together to make it possible.
